Millrise Place launches Adult Day Program (ADP) in South Calgary

A referral only service provided by Alberta Health Services, ADP supports independent adults and their caregivers

A new Adult Day Program (ADP) supported by Alberta Health Services (AHS) is now being offered in south Calgary Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM.  Located at Millrise Place Seniors Assisted Living residence in SW Calgary, the ADP provides independent adults who live at home with engaging therapeutic daytime activities while simultaneously providing their caregivers an opportunity to take a break from their daily home care duties.

“We are delighted to offer the Adult Day Program at Millrise Place,” explains ADP Program Manager Cassandra McLauchlan who is also the Recreation Therapist at Millrise. “Adult Day Programs are offered throughout Calgary and across Alberta and have proven to make a positive impact on the lives of independent adults and their caregivers. Many of our 40 ADP clients do not have the opportunity to take part in activities outside of their own home, so this program encourages them to get out and interact with others. As well, families who provide home-based care 24/7 now have the opportunity to access support for their loved ones in a safe and nurturing environment.”

Getting to know each of the Adult Day Program clients is an important role for Cassandra McLauchlan, Adult Day Program Manager, Millrise Place.

McLauchlan added “All applicants must undergo a home care assessment in order to ensure that the program suits their needs. You must be a Home Care client in order to attend an AHS funded Adult Day Program. Home Care clients (or their family caregivers) who are interested in these programs, should discuss this option with the Home Care - Community Care Coordinator responsible for their care.” Call Community Care Access at (403) 943-1920 for details.

The ADP’s goal is to help older adults maintain an independent lifestyle for as long as possible. Some of the ADP programs offered at Millrise Place include:

-       Health surveillance, monitoring of blood pressure and weight;

-       Medication Assistance while at programs;

-       Recreational, social, and physical activities/programming;

-       Basic personal care as required;

-       Provision of nutritious meals and snacks;

-       Co-payment fees may be waived as indicated by Alberta Health Services;

-       Health education/promotion and support;

About Adult Day Support Program (ADP)

Sponsored by Alberta Health Services (AHS), ADP is a community-based program providing services in a structured group setting for adults with cognitive and or physical challenges who cannot access other main stream community programs. ADP provides the opportunity for adults to enjoy recreational activities and socialize.  The service is for any Alberta adult who has suffered from a stroke, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, dementia, or other disability causing dependence on family, for some aspect of their care. Individuals, families, caregivers, physicians, and health care providers may refer adults for the program. Referrals are made through AHS’s Community Care Access. Client referrals are then screened by AHS Day Program Intake and clients are put on a central waitlist for the program that will best suit their needs.
