JEREMY DERKSEN is TMAC Alberta Chapter's newest member
Jeremy Derksen Media and Public Relations Specialist Tourism Jasper.
As a child, Jeremy Derksen loved getting lost in the woods. He grew up near the
Rockies but until moving to Montreal, he never fully realized how essential the culture
of the West was to him. Western Canada was in his blood and was a part of his soul.
And so he returned to Alberta, finished his English degree and found employment
with the City of Edmontonís communications department.
After two years with the City Ė where he wrote political speeches and coordinated
City-hosted events for the Junos and Canadian Finals Rodeo, he landed a plum job
as outdoor adventure editor for Vue Weekly, Edmontonís independent weekly.
The gig was so much fun that he stayed on for five years. During this period, he
also formed an association with an independent communications consultancy, Drager
Communications, through which he managed strategic communications, multimedia
and social media projects.
Over time, Jeremy expanded his freelance writing portfolio to include The Ski Journal,
The Globe and Mail, Avenue magazine, Unlimited, the Edmonton Journal, Calgary
Herald and others. This led to adventures across North America as well as his own
backyard. He has surfed in Portugal, run the Death Race, skied Western Canada
extensively, and survived confrontations with an owl, llama, bull, octopi and Barcelona traffic.
In 2012, he found an opportunity too good to pass up - to work in tourism and live in
Jasper as Media and Public Relations Specialist for Tourism Jasper. Jeremy and his
wife recently moved to Jasper where they are raising their two rambunctious skiers.
And yes, Jeremy is still getting lost in the woods.
