On Golden Pond Trivia

þ
Despite their many common acquaintances and long careers in show
business, Henry Fonda and Hepburn
had not only never worked together,
they had never even met each other until they began working on the film.
On the first day of shooting, Hepburn presented Henry Fonda with her
long-time companion Spencer Tracy's
"lucky" hat, which Fonda wore in
the film.
This is the only film in which both Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda
appear together.

þ   The Purgatory Cove scene was shot in late September. To keep warm
in the cold water both Doug McKeon
and Henry Fonda had to wear wetsuits
under their clothes. Katharine Hepburn
was supposed to have a stunt double
perform her "dive-in" scene for her, but instead she insisted
on doing it herself.
She dove into the frigid water without a wetsuit.

On Golden Pond Trivia

(from the play and the movie)

þ   Ernest Thompson wrote On Golden Pond when he was only 28 years old. He also wrote 15 other plays.

þ   The movie version of On Golden Pond stared Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda.

þ   Henry Fonda won his one and only Oscar for his portrayal of Norman in the 1981 movie version. Along with
Henry Fonda’s Oscar win, the film received two other Oscars; one for Katherine Hepburn’s portrayal of Ethel and
another for best writing. The film also received seven other Oscar nominations.

þ   The first Broadway production of On Golden Pond opened on February 28, 1979 and ran for a total of 382 shows.

þ   When On Golden Pond opened off-Broadway, Tennessee Williams was in attendance. He
said he loved the play but wished the characters did not have to leave at the end. “Let them
stay the winter,” he said.

þ   The roles of Norman and Ethel were originally played onstage by Tom Aldredge and Frances Sternhagen.

þ   In 2005, On Golden Pond opened at the Cort Theatre on April 7th with an all African
American cast, staring the voice of CNN, James Earl Jones as Norman.

þ   Despite their many common acquaintances and long careers in show business, Henry Fonda and Hepburn
had not only never worked together, they had never even met each other until they began working on the film.
On the first day of shooting, Hepburn presented Henry Fonda with her long-time companion Spencer Tracy's
"lucky" hat, which Fonda wore in the film. This is the only film in which both Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda
appear together.

þ   Walter the Trout was brought over from a local trout pond at the Castle in the Clouds near Holderness,
New Hampshire. Billy and Norman really threw him back into the lake. People still hope to catch him.

þ   Jane Fonda claims that the scene between Chelsea and Norman (Henry Fonda) where she tells him
she wants to be his friend mirrored the real-life relationship between her and her father. During one take
when the younger Fonda unexpectedly grabbed her father's hand, Henry started to cry and ducked his
head away from the camera, embarrassed by his tears. The take appears in the final film.

þ   The Purgatory Cove scene was shot in late September. To keep warm in the cold water both
Doug McKeon and Henry Fonda had to wear wetsuits under their clothes. Katharine Hepburn
was supposed to have a stunt double perform her "dive-in" scene for her, but instead she insisted
on doing it herself. She dove into the frigid water without a wetsuit.

On Golden Pond runs March 16 – May 19 at the Rosebud Opera House.

Reflecting on the full season
Ertman comments;

“We are doing plays that our resident
company of artists is both excited by and passionate
about. The plays are transparent expressions of who
we are as a community of artists and the audiences
are responding to that with gusto! That is incredibly
gratifying to all. We even added Sunday matinees to
keep up with audience demand. A host of new people
are discovering Rosebud Theatre’s variety of shows,
the dramatic topographical setting we find ourselves in,
and the unique experience that only Rosebud can deliver.
Can it get any better? Of course it can -- and it will!
Already response to our four plays in 2007 is setting
new sales milestones.”

The Chronicles of Narnia runs at the
Rosebud Theatre Nov. 4 to Dec. 22

Rosebud chronicles Narnia for the stage

November 2, 2005

The prairies are taking on tinsletown in the battle for Narnia.

With the impending release of Hollywood’s The Chronicles of Narnia:
The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, Rosebud Theatre is taking on
the challenge of presenting their version for the stage without
CGI or THX sound.

The theatre has cast two actors to portray thousands of characters
 from the novel.

Karl Sine and Cari Russell are putting every acting skill they have to
work to make C.S. Lewis’ novel come to life on the Rosebud Theatre
stage, which opens Nov. 4.

According to Sine, he must exact every ounce of his being to tap
into the characters of Peter, Aslan the Lion, Edmund, Mr. and
Mrs. Beaver and a whole host of others.

“Sometimes, I don’t know if I am coming or going,” he says.
“I have to rely on so many different tools, skills and physicalization
to make it happen. This process has been as difficult as any job
I have ever had, but most enjoyable.”

Artistic director Morris Ertman says it’s a tremendous challenge
making Narnia come to life.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” he says. “The show happens without
any pause. We had to utilize our imagination, lighting and giant
set pieces to create a cast of thousands for two people. The
staging is very intricate and everything has to be timed perfectly.”

The whole performance is meant to remind adults what it’s like
to be a kid, he adds.

Unlike the novel, Peter and Lucy come back to the house as adults
and are reluctant to believe their experience ever happened.

Their suspension of disbelief dissipates as they go through the
wardrobe and are taken back to a time when they believed in magic.

“If you imagine it will come, Narnia will come to you,” Ertman says.

With the feature film set for release, Rosebud has been able
to take advantage of the studio’s heavy marketing campaign
to seep the play into the consciousness of the masses.

The play is more than 60% sold and will run until Dec. 22.
For tickets, call 1-800-267-7553.
