Hockey Dad: A Play In 3 Periods is the inaugural production of burnt thicket theatre,
one of Calgary’s newest theatre companies, which aims to enliven [restore life to]
audiences with original performance. These two performances are part of a February
tour which includes shows at the Alberta Winter Games (Feb. 5-6 in Cold Lake) and
in Vancouver during the Olympics (Feb. 17-27 at Pacific Theatre).
James Popoff, Hockey Dad co-creator and performer, is the Founding Artistic Director
of burnt thicket theatre. Popoff, an Alberta native who grew up on hockey, completed
an M.F.A. in drama at University of Calgary. “It’s surprising to see how much of my own
story is finding its way into the script,” says this father of four, “from my sons’ recent
romance with the game, to my dad’s years with the Lloydminster Border Kings.”

Directed by Strathmore resident and co-creator Stephen Waldschmidt, who will be
reprising the role of Jesus in The Canadian Badlands Passion Play in the summer of 2010.
